Mi Go

Mi-go are both scientists and colonists—extraterrestrial travelers from the Dark Tapestry who view the universe as a canvas to be mastered and controlled. Their numbers on any particular planet can vary, but taken on a galactic scale, these numbers can only be mind-numbing in scope. A typical mi-go is roughly the size of a human, but weighs only 90 pounds.
Ecology

Although a mi-go’s shape might suggest an arthropod, especially with its long, insectlike limbs and diaphanous wings, the creature is in fact a highly evolved form of extraterrestrial fungus. Mi-go communicate via a combination of clicking of pincers and subtle shifts in the coloration of their bulbous heads—other creatures can learn this language, but without similar biologies (or the ability to mimic these noises and colors with illusions) can only hope to “listen” to a mi-go. A mi-go can speak in a strange, buzzing voice, but generally only does so when forced to speak to other creatures.
Habitat & Society

Mi-go goals on the planets they invade and colonize can vary, from stripping them of mineral resources to seeking biological resources for their scientific experiments. Mi-go are often viewed as gods or demons by the more primitive societies they encounter, and are fond of capitalizing upon these fears to further their own agendas. Masters of disguise, they often infiltrate societies so as to better manipulate, harvest, and eventually consume the society for their own needs. Despite their skill in this regard, they generally keep the core strongholds of their operations in remote regions—hilly and mountainous areas are favored for the preponderance of caves and other natural features that are easily converted into defensible hideouts.

Although masters of strange biological technologies, migo are also quite fervent in religious matters. Most worship Shub-Niggurath, for they view this goddess’s fecundity as the pinnacle of their own biological technologies and skills. A mi-go sees very little difference between the cold hard facts of science and the intensely interpretative complexities of faith.
Mi-Go Technology

The mi-go mastery of surgical and biological technologies incorporates the magical; the techniques they utilize in their pursuit of world colonization manifest in a wide range of strange and frightening tools. These devices merge magic and technology in strange and unsettling ways. For the most part, mi-go technology functions identically to normal magic items—the devices simply look disturbing and weird to other creatures. The function of mi-go technological items can be identified as if they were normal magic items, but with a –5 penalty on the Spellcraft check. Likewise, attempts to utilize mi-go technology with Use Magic Device take a –5 penalty. At the GM’s discretion, after a character becomes familiar with mi-go technology (perhaps after identifying or using the items over the course of an adventure or two), these penalties might vanish.

While you can simulate mi-go technology by simply describing existing magic items as strange and unusual things (a mi-go potion of cure serious wounds might look like a syringe filled with bubbling blue liquid, for example, while a mi-go rod of thunder and lightning might look like a strange rifle-like device made of crystal and pulsating fleshy veins, and might deal cold damage in place of electrical damage), other items should be more unique, such as this example.

Appearance

A mi-go resembles an arthropod with segmented limbs, diaphanous wings, and a bulbous lump for a head. A typical mi-go is human-sized and weighs 90 pounds.[2]
Ecology

Mi-go communicate by clicking their pincers and changing the colour of their heads; this sign language can be learnt but usually not 'spoken' by other creatures. A mi-go can speak in a strange, buzzing voice, but only when forced to do so. Mi-go do not need to breathe and can fly through outer space at an incredible speed. Their claws are capable of swiftly and painfully performing surgical operations upon hapless victims.[2]
Society

Mi-go invade and colonise planets for various purposes, from strip-mining them to seeking resources for scientific experiments. They are usually viewed as gods or demons by the primitive inhabitants of these planets, a fear that they exploit to the fullest to disguise themselves and infiltrate and harvest these societies. They usually hide their core bases of operations in remote, defensible places.[2]

Mi-go technology merges magic and technology in strange and unsettling ways. Most mi-go worship Shub-Niggurath, seeing her fecundity as the pinnacle of their own biological technologies and skills. To a mi-go, science and faith are largely the same.[2]
On Golarion

The Uskheart Caves of Nidal are home to a mi-go colony that has long been allied to the Shades of the Uskwood. In exchange for permission to mine resources rare on their world, the mi-go whisper blasphemous secrets to the druids, the latest of which is the location of a hive queen in the Uskwood.[3]

Society

Mi-go view the universe as a canvas to be controlled and mastered. They consider themselves superior beings and can remake the flesh of victims to be ideal servitors or just to fit their aesthetics, all while keeping them alive (and insane) despite invasive surgeries, like the extraction of the subject's brain into a mi-go brain cylinder. Using their technology and malleable bodies, mi-go create mi-go hollowskins resembling their victims to infiltrate societies.[2]

Mi-go meld magic and faith with science and technology, considering both largely the same. Most of them worship the entities of the Elder Mythos, and consider themselves something akin to students of their gods.[2]

The Mi-go are an extraterrestrial species from the planet Yuggoth (implied to be the dwarf planet Pluto). They are described as winged creatures with large claws and heads covered in antennae.

The Mi-go are a scientifically and technologically advanced race, having a particularly sophisticated grasp of surgical techniques and neuroscience.

Description Edit

The Mi-go are pinkish, fungoid, crustacean-like entities with a "convoluted ellipsoid" composed of pyramided, fleshy rings and covered in antennae where a head would normally be. They are about 5-feet (1.5m) long, and their crustacean-like bodies bear numerous sets of paired appendages. They also possess a pair of membranous bat-like wings which are used to fly through the "ether" of outer space (a pre-Einsteinian concept). The wings do not function well on Earth. Several other races in Lovecraft's Mythos have wings like these as well, suggesting they are a standard mode of interplanetary travel.

The Mi-go are fundamentally alien with respect to Earthly life; according to two reports in the original short story, their bodies consist of a form of matter that does not occur naturally on Earth. Strangely, they do not appear in photography, since the matter they are made off reflects light differently. However, they are described as being most like fungi in terms of their biology, although their outward appearance is much like that of a crustacean. Interestingly, they are capable of going into suspended animation until softened and reheated by the sun or some other source of heat.

They typically communicate by changing the color of their heads, however they are oftentimes able to speak the human language. If not, they can modify their bodies to make them able to speak. However there will always be a buzzy sound when they speak and their voice sounds creepy.

The Mi-go can transport humans from Earth to Yuggoth (and beyond) and back again by removing the subject's brain and placing it into a "brain cylinder", which can be attached to external devices to allow it to see, hear, and speak.

One of the moons of Yuggoth holds designs that are sacred to the Mi-go. The symbols inscribed upon the moon are useful in various processes mentioned in the Necronomicon. It is said that transcriptions of these designs can be sensed by the Mi-go, and those possessing them shall be hunted down by the few remaining on Earth.
In the Expanded MythosEdit

Extended universe sigil The Mi-go previously worshipped the beings Yog-Sothoth, Nyarlathotep, Sedmelluq and Shub-Niggurath, among others, although in newer works it is acknowledged that the Mi-go are at war with the Elder Gods. Their moral system is completely alien, making them seem highly malicious from a human perspective.

According to some accounts, Hastur apparently despises the Mi-go. His cult, servants of "Him Who Is Not to be Named", are dedicated to hunting them down and exterminating the fungoid threat.

According to other accounts, the Mi-go serve and worship Hastur specifically, just like the Deep Ones worship Cthulhu for example, having an alliance with the Byakhee, who also serve Hastur. They have a leader who directs them according to Hastur's wishes, named N'gah-Kthun. (EXP: The Necronomicon: The Dee Translation) and a human ally of the Mi-go mentions "Him Who is not to be Named" in the list of honored entities along with Nyarlathotep and Shub-Niggurath. (HPL: The Whisperer in Darkness)

Roughly the same size as an adult human, the Mi-go appear crustacean or insectiod in nature but are actually a type of fungal lifeform. Their heads are lozenge-shaped, with a mane of small antennae, their bodies have multiple pairs of limbs attached to the thorax, and they sport a pair of large wings which, while not particularly effective in an atmosphere, allow them to traverse the depths of space at a considerable speed. In addition, sufficiently low temperatures will simply cause a Mi-go to enter a kind of suspended animation; subsequent exposure to a suitable heat source will reanimate the creature, whereby it will continue about its business with no ill effects.

Some sources also state that the Mi-go cannot be captured through the use of conventional recording devices, as their bodies are composed of a strange otherworldly substance which does not show up on such equipment.

Where the Mi-go originate is a mystery, but it is known that they have established a colony on Yuggoth, a planet on the outskirts of our solar system, and that at least a handful make their home on Earth, although they are inimically hostile to the human race.

They have been known to transport samples of our species to Yuggoth by removing the brain and inserting it into a cylindrical contraption. This device is fitted with sensory equipment which allows the prisoner to see and hear as normal, but does not permit any interaction with its surroundings. The reason the Mi-go indulge in this practice is unknown.

The Mi-go are also believed to worship (or at least pay lip-service to) the Outer Gods Shub-Niggurath and Nyarlathotep, and their colony on Yuggoth is known to house many designs which can be used in the furtherance of the rituals described in the Necronomicon; however, the Mi-Go have a mystical sense which allows them to tell when these designs are being transcribed by humans, and they will ruthlessly hunt down and exterminate any with copies in their possession.
