The Bjarni Trade Barons are a group of Varan who focus on their own mercantile interests, rather than serving the illithids. They do not (yet) openly rebel against the Illithids, but their actions in seeking their own sufficiency has made the mind flayers nervous. There may come a reckoning.
The Varan on Bjarni are considerably different from other Varan, preferring what they consider honest work. They have emerged as something of a mercantile power over the past few years, and are regarded as honorable throughout the Fehu Ring. Paradoxically, the illithids view these Varan as troublemakers and have done whatever they can to either bring them into line with the other Varan, or ruin. So far, open war between the two factions has been avoided by the diplomatic skill of the Bjarni Consortium. The illithids are known for patience and cunning, however, and the Bjarni Varan must be on constant guard against mind flayer treachery.
